Here Are the Top 6 Places to Visit in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang is a picturesque town that draws travelers, especially those with a spiritual inclination toward Buddhism. From its majestic monasteries to snow-laden passes and cascading waterfalls, there are plenty of places to visit in Tawang that showcase the town’s natural charm, spiritual depth, and historical richness. Here’s a guide to six must-visit spots in this Himalayan gem.

1. Tawang Monastery

Standing proudly as the largest monastery in India and the second-largest in the world, Tawang Monastery—also called Golden Namgyal Lhatse—is the crown jewel of the region. Built 400 years ago by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, this massive three-story structure sits at 3,000 meters above sea level, enclosed within a 925-foot wall. Inside, a giant statue of Lord Buddha and intricate Tibetan-style artwork make this a soul-soothing experience.

2. Sela Pass

A gateway into Tawang, Sela Pass offers mesmerizing views with its snow-covered terrain and the sacred Sela Lake. This area is believed to host 101 lakes, revered in Buddhist traditions. With breathtaking views and spiritual significance, Sela Pass is easily one of the most peaceful and scenic places to visit in Tawang.

3. Tawang War Memorial

This 40-foot high memorial commemorates the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1962 Sino-India war. Honoring heroes like Jaswant Singh, the memorial displays his uniform, watch, cap, and belt. It’s not just a historic site—it’s a reminder of courage and sacrifice.

5. Nuranang Falls

Also known as Jung Falls, Nuranang Falls is one of the most stunning places to visit in Tawang. The water plummets from a height of 100 feet, set against a backdrop of lush green forest and misty hills. It’s the ideal place for a peaceful escape or a scenic picnic.

6. Gorichen Peak

Standing tall at 22,500 feet above sea level, Gorichen Peak is the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh.
