The Top 10 Must-Try Tropical Fruits of Europe

Posted on July 23, 2025

When thinking of tropical fruits, Europe might not be the first place that comes to mind — but thanks to unique microclimates and centuries-old cultivation traditions, the continent offers a surprisingly rich variety of exotic fruits. These tropical fruits of Europe not only offer exceptional flavor but also reflect the rich agricultural heritage of their regions. Here’s a closer look at some of the finest tropical fruits grown across Europe:

1. Kiwi

Grown in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region, this French kiwi boasts vibrant green flesh, a soft texture, and a sweet-tart flavor. Its skin is brownish-green with fine silky hairs. The cool autumns in this region allow the kiwi to develop a higher sugar content, making it one of the most flavorful tropical fruits of Europe.

2. Ficodindia di San Cono

This Sicilian prickly pear comes in red, white, and yellow varieties and grows between 200–600 meters in altitude. Its juicy flesh tastes like a blend of lemon and watermelon. These fragile, aromatic fruits are often used in jams, sauces, or even roasted in traditional Sicilian cuisine.

3. Granada Mollar de Elche

A sweet, antioxidant-rich pomegranate from Alicante, Spain, known for its soft seeds and deep red hue. With more than 70% of its production exported, it’s no wonder this fruit is among the most sought-after tropical fruits of Europe.

4. Fico Bianco del Cilento

These sun-dried figs from Salerno’s Cilento National Park are a delicacy. The Dottato variety is prized for its drought resistance and unique flavor, enhanced by the region’s microclimate. Often stuffed with nuts or coated in chocolate, they were once a staple for Roman laborers.

5. Anona da Madeira

Thriving in Madeira’s subtropical climate, this custard apple has a soft white pulp with flavors reminiscent of banana, pineapple, and strawberry. Its sweet, creamy texture makes it a beloved fruit among locals and tourists alike.

6. Aktinidio Pierias

Introduced in 1973, this Greek kiwi grows in the fertile Pierian plains. With reddish-green skin and pale green, juicy flesh, it belongs to the Hayward variety and is celebrated for its ability to stay fresh for months post-harvest.

7. Ananás dos Açores

This exclusive pineapple from São Miguel in the Azores is grown in traditional glass greenhouses. With orange skin and sweet yellow flesh, it takes up to two years to mature. It’s a rare tropical treasure from Europe’s westernmost edge.

8. Armenian Pomegranate

Grown in the Armenian Highlands for centuries, these pomegranates are round with a ruby-red rind and filled with sweet-tart arils. Known as “Nur” in Armenian, these fruits are an essential part of the region’s identity and diet.

9. Plátano de Canarias

These Canary Island bananas are small, sweet, and nutrient-rich. Their unique flavor comes from volcanic soil and high enzyme activity, which accelerates ripening. Rich in potassium and phosphorus, they outshine typical bananas found elsewhere.

10. Fragosika

Often called the “banana of Symi,” this prickly pear grows across the Aegean islands. Its delicate flavor and nutrient-rich pulp make it a staple in traditional Greek sweets like misokofti, a creamy, pudding-style dessert.
