The Ultimate Guide to the Top 4 Places to Visit in Junagadh

Junagadh, a culturally rich city in Gujarat, officially became a part of India in 1948. Steeped in history and mythology, the name Junagadh translates to “Old Fort,” and the city is often referred to as the “City of Greeks” due to its Hellenistic influences. Over centuries, the region was ruled by various powerful empires, each leaving behind remarkable architecture, monuments, and stories that now make Junagadh a popular travel destination. Here are the top 4 places to visit in Junagadh for an unforgettable experience.

1. Uperkot Fort

Located on the eastern side of Junagadh, Uperkot Fort is a historical gem that dates back over 2,300 years. Built at the foothills of the Girnar Hills during the Mauryan Empire, the fort boasts 20-meter-high defensive walls and ancient step wells. Surrounded by lush greenery, the fort also features caves, temples, and cannons. Legend says crocodiles once guarded its deep wells—some of which are 300 feet deep—making it both a marvel of architecture and defense.

2. Mahabat Maqbara

One of the most stunning examples of Indo-Islamic architecture in India, Mahabat Maqbara is the mausoleum of Bahaduddinbhai Hasainbhai, constructed in 1892. Nearby stands the Bahauddin Maqbara, completed in 1896 and dedicated to Mahabat Khan II. These mausoleums are famous for their intricate stone carvings, detailed arches, spiral staircases, and soaring minarets. It’s a must-visit site in Junagadh for history buffs and architecture lovers.

3. Adi-Kadi Vav & Navghan Kuwo

Located within the Uperkot Fort complex, these two historic stepwells are wrapped in mystery and legend. Adi-Kadi Vav, built in the 15th century, features nine levels of stone steps and is linked to a tragic tale where two maidens—Adi and Kadi—were sacrificed to bring water to the well. Nearby, Navghan Kuwo, dating back to the 11th century, is older and has a spiral staircase carved into the rock. These stepwells are iconic places to visit in Junagadh for their historical significance and haunting beauty.

4. Gir National Park

Gir is the only natural habitat of the majestic Asiatic lions, making it a global conservation success story. Once at risk of extinction, these lions were saved by the efforts of the Nawab of Junagadh, who banned hunting and created protected zones. The dry deciduous forests of Gir are also home to leopards, hyenas, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds. A safari here is one of the most thrilling places to visit in Junagadh, especially for wildlife enthusiasts.
