Notwithstanding what the poet claims, the Oregon Islands are heart metaphors.

Posted on April 18, 2023

Oregon, located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, is known for its stunning mix of beaches, forests, rivers, and mountains. With more than 550 miles of coastline along the Pacific Ocean, the state is also home to a number of unique islands—both inland and offshore. These Oregon Islands offer breathtaking views, rich wildlife, and fun outdoor activities for all kinds of travelers.

From sea stacks rising out of the ocean to peaceful river islands, the Oregon Islands are perfect for anyone who loves nature, photography, hiking, or simply enjoying quiet, scenic spots. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular and fascinating islands in Oregon.

1. Haystack Rock

One of the most iconic landmarks in Oregon, Haystack Rock stands 235 feet tall off the shore of Cannon Beach. It’s part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is home to sea stars, anemones, mussels, and seabirds like puffins. At low tide, you can walk right up to the base and explore its tide pools—just remember to be gentle with the marine life and follow Leave No Trace principles.

2. Tillamook Rock

Tillamook Rock

Just off the coast near Tillamook Head, you’ll find Tillamook Rock, a rugged island nicknamed “Terrible Tilly.” It once had a lighthouse that operated from 1881 to 1957. Although the island is now abandoned, it’s known for its dramatic views and wild weather. While you can’t visit the island itself, many people enjoy boat tours or view it from the shore, especially for birdwatching.

3. Three Arch Rocks

Three Arch Rocks

Located near Oceanside, Three Arch Rocks is a group of small rocky islands that are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. These islands are protected because they’re nesting spots for seabirds and marine animals. Visitors aren’t allowed on the islands, but you can enjoy amazing views—and maybe spot puffins or seals—using binoculars from the beach.

4. Sauvie Island

Sauvie Island, located in the Columbia River near Portland, is the largest river island in the U.S. It’s a popular spot for hiking, birdwatching, fishing, and kayaking. The island is also home to the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area and several local farms. In the fall, it becomes a favorite for pumpkin picking and corn mazes, while in summer you can enjoy berry picking and fresh produce at farm stands.

5. Wizard Island

Wizard Island

Wizard Island sits in the middle of Crater Lake and was formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. It’s a favorite stop on boat tours of the lake. Visitors can hike to the summit for incredible views or explore the crater at the top, known as the “Witches Cauldron.” The surrounding forest and deep blue lake make it one of Oregon’s most unique natural wonders.
