Listed below are five Mississippi islands that should not be missed at any cost.

Posted on April 18, 2023

Sipping fruity drinks while lounging on a tropical beach may sound like a luxury vacation that costs a fortune—but if you’re in Mississippi, it doesn’t have to be. Our state is home to several breathtaking Mississippi islands that offer all the beauty of a beach getaway without breaking the bank.

Whether you’re into camping, sunbathing, hiking, or just relaxing by the ocean, these five Mississippi islands are perfect for your next summer adventure.

1. Ship Island

Mississippi islands

Ship Island is actually made up of two parts—East Ship Island and West Ship Island—once connected but split by Hurricane Camille in 1969. Both sections boast stunning white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. East Ship Island is more remote and only accessible by private boat, making it ideal for primitive camping (check out Ship Island Excursions). West Ship Island is easier to reach via ferry and offers modern amenities along with historic Fort Massachusetts, which features guided tours. Dolphins are often spotted near the shoreline, making this island a top summer destination for nature lovers and families alike.

2. Horn Island

Horn Island

While Ship Island may be more popular, Horn Island remains a peaceful hidden gem. Once a muse to local artist Walter Anderson, this wild and scenic island is known for its inspiring landscapes and quiet atmosphere. There’s no bridge or ferry service—only private charters like Horn Island Charters can get you there—which means fewer crowds and more solitude. It’s a great choice for remote camping or a calm day on the water, far from the hustle and bustle.

3. Cat Island

Cat Island

Located at the westernmost point of the Mississippi islands, Cat Island was privately owned until 2002, when it became part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Today, it’s a haven for those looking to escape everyday life. Services like Cat Island Excursions offer sightseeing tours, kayaking, and fishing charters, making it easy to experience the untouched beauty of the island’s beaches and waters.

4. Petit-Bois Island

Petit-Bois Island

Part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pascagoula, Petit Bois Island is a designated Wilderness Area and Mississippi Coastal Preserve. It’s home to endangered bird species like the white plover and the state’s largest colony of laughing gulls. Outdoor enthusiasts love this island for its clean, quiet beaches—perfect for swimming, hiking, camping, and wildlife spotting.

5. Deer Island

Deer Island

Just a quarter mile off the coast of Biloxi, Deer Island is the closest of all Mississippi islands to the mainland—yet many locals don’t even know it exists. The 400-acre island has minimal development, making it perfect for a quiet retreat. It also provides habitat for 10 endangered species. Best of all, it’s easily accessible by kayak, paddleboard, or small boat, making it one of the most convenient escapes in the state.
