9 Most Beautiful Mountain Towns to Visit in the Georgia Mountains

Posted on March 9, 2023

When you think of mountain getaways, states like Colorado and Montana often come to mind. But don’t overlook the best Georgia mountains, they may not reach the towering heights of the Rockies, but they’re rich in charm, scenic beauty, and Southern hospitality. Nestled in the North Georgia Mountains, these cozy towns are perfect for nature lovers looking to unplug and relax. From hiking trails and waterfalls to wineries and historic downtowns, these mountain towns have something for everyone.

1. The Blue Ridge

The Blue Ridge

Blue Ridge, which is tucked away in the Chattahoochee National Forest, has fantastic fishing, breathtaking drives, and locally grown food. Renting a room in a nearby mountain lodge or cabin for a quieter getaway is one of the greatest ways to explore Blue Ridge. Hikers can hike to the Toccoa River suspension bridge by starting at the Benton Mackaye Trail next to Highway 60. Visit the family-friendly Blue Ridge downtown attractions before refueling at renowned eateries like Harvest on Main, known for its farm-to-table dinners, and Black Sheep, which serves Southern fusion cuisine and moonshine. You can have locally produced German-style beers at the Fanning Brewing Company if the moonshine is a little too potent for you.

2. Dillard

Dillard

Mountain ranges surround the Georgia town of Dillard, which is a popular destination for outdoor activities. You may easily spend your weekend here hiking, bicycling, and fishing while taking in the tranquil surroundings. Book a suite or cottage at the family-run Dillard House, a retreat in the countryside, to indulge yourself and truly unwind. There is a fantastic on-site restaurant where you can indulge in traditional Southern comfort food.

3. Dahlonega

Dahlonega

Because there are so many things to do in Georgia, Dahlonega has long been a favorite mountain town in Georgia. You can go to historical Gold Rush locations, sample regional wines at surrounding wineries, and eat at some incredible restaurants. Wolf Mountain Vineyards and Montaluce Winery are two well-known wineries in this area. The Dahlonega General Store, Paul Thomas Chocolates, Outlaw Jerky, and Trail Grub are just a few of the stores you may find in Dahlonega’s lovely public plaza. The town is also easily accessible by car and is a short side excursion from Atlanta on weekends.

4. Sky Valley

Sky Valley

If a town has a name like “Sky Valley,” you can know it’s picturesque and lovely. A good place to go trekking is along the Bartram Trail, which runs from the North Carolina border into North Georgia, which is considered one of the best things to do in the North Georgia Mountains. The 12-mile journey from the Warwoman Road Trailhead to Beegum Gap is recommended for experienced hikers who go out early because it travels through some of the most picturesque areas in the area. You can stay at some fantastic vacation rentals in Sky Valley that have beautiful views.

5. Ellijay

Ellijay

Ellijay has small-town charm and a wide range of activities, similar to many of Georgia’s mountain villages. This is the perfect location for a family celebration of the seasons and a farm tour. This area is home to Hillcrest Orchards, Mountain Valley Farm, the Reece Apple Home, and R&A Orchards. Go to the Georgia Apple Festival in Ellijay in October to enjoy the procession, vintage car display, and live performances. Some popular attractions in Ellijay include the Tabor House and Civil War Museum, Engelheim Vineyard, Cartecay Vineyards, and Build an Ark Animal Rescue.

6. Dawsonville

Dawsonville

Dawsonville is home to Amicalola Falls, the biggest cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi, which is situated in the Northeast Georgia Mountains. The Appalachian Trail ends here in the south as well. But, there are several activities besides simply enjoying the outdoors here. Fans of NASCAR will like the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Gordon Pirkle’s Dawsonville Pool Room, and the Dawsonville Moonshine Distillery is unquestionably worthwhile. When visiting Dawsonville in the fall, be sure to check out Bradley’s Pumpkin Patch and Uncle Shuck’s and Buck’s corn mazes. The North Georgia Premium Outlets are also nearby, which is great news for shoppers.

7. Blairsville

Blairsville

If you love the outdoors, Blairsville is a great destination to visit in Georgia. You can easily access hiking paths and picnic places thanks to its location in the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. The highest natural point in Georgia, Brasstown Bald, can be reached by hiking from here, making it an excellent home base for your trip. Visit Lake Nottely or Lake Trahylta for lakeside activities. Golfers can play a round at either the Old Union Golf Course or the Butternut Creek Golf Course.

8. Sautee

This mountain village, also known as Sautee-Nacoochee, is full of history, culture, and legacy. The Hardman Farm and the Sautee Nacoochee Center, an arts center with a restored historic cabin, and the Stovall Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia, are two of the best locations to visit in this area. Yet, the superb whitewater rafting options on the river are the main draw for visitors. Wine lovers can visit the nearby Tiger Mountain Winery and Stonewall Creek Vineyards, and there are wonderful outdoor dining establishments where you can dine and take in mountain vistas.
