Posted on March 4, 2021

Know About the Famous Pilgrim Site and Places to Visit in Srisailamgudem Devasthanam

Nestled along the banks of the Krishna River, Srisailamgudem Devasthanam is a spiritual village located in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. Known for its religious significance and scenic beauty, this holy town draws thousands of devotees and tourists every year. One of the main highlights is the revered Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. But beyond this sacred site, there are many other places to visit in Srisailamgudem Devasthanam that offer a perfect blend of devotion, nature, and history—making it an ideal destination for a serene getaway with family and friends, especially during the winter season.

1. Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple

Perched atop the Nallamala Hills, this ancient temple is the spiritual heart of Srisailam. Often referred to simply as the Srisailam Temple, it is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and is equally significant for Goddess Bhramaramba, one of the 18 Shakti Peethas. The temple complex is encircled by high, intricately carved stone walls and includes sub-shrines, mandapas (pillared halls), and sacred springs. Its divine energy and architectural grandeur make it one of the must-visit places to visit in Srisailamgudem Devasthanam.

2. Nallamala Forests

Home to the largest stretch of undisturbed forest in Southern India, the Nallamala Forests are a paradise for nature lovers. A significant portion of these forests falls under the Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, which is known for tiger and leopard sightings. With cool, fresh air and lush green surroundings, it’s a peaceful escape where one can reconnect with nature.

3. Sakshi Ganapati Temple

Located just 3 km from Srisailam, this temple is dedicated to Lord Ganapathi. According to local belief, the deity here keeps a record of all the pilgrims visiting Srisailam, hence the name “Sakshi” (witness). The idol of Lord Ganesha is unique—holding a book in one hand and a pen in the other, symbolizing the divine ledger of devotees. It’s a sacred and tranquil stop among the places to visit in Srisailamgudem Devasthanam.

4. Nagalooty

About 28 km from Srisailam, Nagalooty is rich in historical significance. It is known for its collection of ancient temple ruins and idols that date back to the 13th–15th centuries. The Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, is a highlight here. Visitors are often amazed by the majestic mandapas and intricate sculptures that reflect the grandeur of a bygone era.

5. Akka Mahadevi Caves

Situated 10 km from the main temple, these mystical caves are named after the 12th-century saint-poetess Akka Mahadevi. Accessible only by boat, the journey to these caves offers stunning views of the Krishna River and surrounding hills. Inside, a naturally formed Shiva Linga sits deep within the cave. Due to the darkness, carrying a flashlight is recommended. Surrounded by raw natural beauty, this is one of the more adventurous and spiritually charged places to visit in Srisailamgudem Devasthanam.

6. Srisailam Dam

Located about 14 km from Srisailam, the Srisailam Dam is one of India’s largest dams built across the Krishna River. Constructed over a span of two decades and completed in 1981, the dam sits 300 meters above sea level. It irrigates nearly 200,000 acres of land and offers spectacular views of lush greenery and clear waters. It’s a favorite picnic spot for both tourists and locals.
