With 58 towering fourteeners, the Colorado Mountains proudly claim their status as a hiker’s and photographer’s paradise. These majestic peaks, many of which rise above 14,000 feet, define the state’s rugged landscape and inspire countless adventurers to chase panoramic views, alpine lakes, and unforgettable photo ops. From serene hikes to dramatic drives, Colorado offers something for every fitness level. Whether you’re scaling summits or capturing landscapes, the Colorado Mountains promise beauty and thrills.

Here’s a look at some of the most iconic mountain destinations in Colorado that you must explore.

1. MOUNT ELBERT

MOUNT ELBERT

Standing tall at 14,440 feet, Mount Elbert is the highest point in Colorado and the second-highest in the U.S. Part of the Sawatch Range, this peak attracts seasoned climbers and casual visitors alike. A 4.5-mile hike leads to the summit, gaining over 4,500 feet in elevation. For a less intense experience, take in views from the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad.

  • Best time to visit: July to August
  • Nearest town: Aspen (40 miles)
  • Distance from State Centre: 582.5 miles

2. MAROON BELLS

MAROON BELLS

The Maroon Bells (North Maroon Peak and Maroon Peak) are among the most photographed Colorado Mountains. Their dramatic, pyramid-like faces reflect beautifully in Maroon Lake. A 1.5-mile scenic loop lets visitors take in wildflowers, alpine forests, and clear skies. From late May to October, shuttle access is available from Aspen Highlands.

3. PIKES PEAK 

PIKES PEAK

Pikes Peak rises to 14,115 feet and is deeply tied to Colorado’s heritage. Named after explorer Zebulon Pike, this peak offers history and grandeur. You can drive up the twisting Pikes Peak Highway or ride the Broadmoor Manitou Cog Railway. Either route rewards you with stunning views and photographic opportunities.

4. LONGS PEAK

LONGS PEAK

Longs Peak, the crown jewel of Rocky Mountain National Park, stands at 14,255 feet. With sharp ridges and a flat summit, it offers unique geometry that shifts dramatically with light and shadow. Though technical climbing is required for the summit, the nearby Mills Lake hike gives incredible views of Longs Peak.

5. MOUNT EVANS

MOUNT EVANS

Mount Evans is one of the few Colorado Mountains accessible by car. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway leads to the summit at 14,260 feet, the highest paved road in North America. Seasonal closures due to snow are common, but during open months, the sweeping views make it a must-visit.

6. MOUNT SNEFFELS

MOUNT SNEFFELS

With jagged ridges and a formidable presence, Mount Sneffels rises to 14,150 feet and dominates the Mount Sneffels Wilderness. Though inaccessible by road, it can be viewed from the Dallas Divide Pass or experienced via the Sneffels Highline Loop—an intense but rewarding 14-mile hike.

  • Nearest town: Ridgway
  • Distance from State Centre: 455.4 miles
